Earlier this month, selected learners from schools in Walvis Bay and Lüderitz embarked on a transformative journey into the heart of the Namib Desert. They were treated to a week-long excursion at the Namib Desert Environmental Education Trust (NaDEET), an award-winning environmental education center that emphasizes sustainable living through practical experiences.
Despite the bitter cold mornings the learners started their day early, with various hands-on activities and outdoor experiences aimed at teaching the learners about the importance of environmental sustainability. They gained hands-on experience with conservation practices, witnessed the importance of preserving natural habitats, motivating them to adopt more eco-friendly habits in their daily lives. It also helped the learners appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of the Namib Desert.
Learners like Penicky and Johnson from Kuisebmond Secondary School noted that the NaDEET visit significantly enhanced their understanding of the environment. “We gained hands-on experience with conservation practices and witnessed the importance of preserving the natural habitat," they said.
Namulo from Duinesig High School highlighted a water dripping experiment that taught him about the wastage of water and the financial implications of leaks. This practical lesson hit home as he related it to the leaking pipes in his own house.
A significant aspect of the trip was the opportunity for learners to engage with their peers from different schools. It also taught the learners the value of pushing beyond their comfort zones and embracing new challenges.
This was the first two groups of the 100 students treated to a hands-on environmental excursion initiative as part of Manica Group Namibia's 100-year anniversary celebrations. Learners from various schools in Walvis Bay, Windhoek, and Lüderitz were selected to visit and learn at NaDEET.
