Transporting premium grapes

Posted: 30 Nov 2023Category: Operations

Grapes are one of Namibia's main agricultural exports. Rennies Transport had the opportunity to assist various key grape producers to transport high-quality grapes from Aussenkehr, in the far south of Namibia, and from Northern Cape Town, South Africa, to Walvis Bay where it is being loaded onto container ships destined for Europe. As the grape harvesting season ends around the first or second week in January next year, trucks are deployed around the clock to ensure the grapes are dispatched and delivered at the port for export.

Rennies Transport's trucks travel about 2550km back and forth carrying the grapes stored in reefer containers. These reefers need to be at a constant temperature of 0.5 degrees Celsius to ensure the grapes stay fresh. Special probes and sensors allow the client to monitor the conditions in the reefer whilst the trucks' high-quality gensets ensure that the reefer containers stay "plugged-in" to maintain the 0.5 degrees Celsius environment en route to the harbour.

Namibian grapes are often ready for export two weeks ahead of South African exports. Although the transport costs are higher than the normal Cape Town route (about 900km farther), Walvis Bay is the preferred option, as the Walvis Bay port is more efficient and has less delays which means the grapes can reach the European market much faster. A staggering 800 reefer containers are expected to be shipped to Europe. The vessel below was the MV MSC Sweden VI, that loaded about 175 40 foot reefers to ship to Europe.
